Towson, Md. (June 27, 2008) — Firefighters will stress the importance of using life preservers during "Boater Safety Days," scheduled over the Fourth of July weekend.
Battalion Chief James Devers will be available for media interviews about Boater Safety Days and the importance of life preservers on Saturday, July 5, 1 p.m., at the Sunset Harbor Marina, 1651 Browns Road, Essex, 21221.
The Fire Department instituted Boater Safety Days last year, recognizing that the Fourth of July weekend is the busiest boating weekend of the year and, therefore, a good opportunity to reach boaters with important safety information. Last year's message focused on prevention of carbon monoxide poisoning on boats, a response to the tragic deaths of three people on a boat harbored in an east side marina early last summer.
This year, career and volunteer firefighters will visit marinas from July 4 through July 6, educating boaters about why they should wear life preservers. About 70 percent of all boating fatalities are drownings. Almost 85 percent of those who drown are not wearing life jackets.
"Just having a life jacket aboard your boat does not save lives. Wearing them saves lives," said Fire Chief John J. Hohman.
